Two RDS licensing servers

$

Hello,

Here is our RDS setup

On premises:

- DC, AD RDS licensing server Win 2008 subnet 192.168.1.X

- One RDS server for 30 users (not all 30 users logs in at the same time. Average 10 users)

Azure Cloud

- DC, AD 2016 different site AD sync enable with one premise AD, DC server ( 2008) Subnet 172.1.X.X

- Planning to install one RDS server in Azure

- Planning to run Licensing server on Azure DC server.

We are planning to test the Azure setup for 3-4 months after successful testing on premises servers will be decommissioned and all the users will login to Azure RDS server.

My question is, can we run two licensing servers in this scenario? On premises is already running on 2008. Can we install another one on Azure server and activate it with 2016 RDS licenses?

Thanks in Advance.

Device and disk redirection problem

Hello!

We have RDS server running on Windows 2012r2 with latest updates.

RDS settings and RDP shortcuts configured configured via GPO.

Mostly everything works fine but sometimes disk redirection and printer redirection stop working, but buffer redirection works.

There are no errors in Event Viewer.

Is there any options to troubleshoot and solve this magical issue?

How do I Replace the Self-Signed Remote Desktop Certificate in the "Remote Desktop" Store on 300+ servers

Hi,

I want to upgrade all the certificates on all of our servers in our domain to SHA256. We only use RDP to logon to each domain member we do not have a RD gateway or such. I have Read that you can manually replace it using powershell (https://www.derekseaman.com/2013/01/creating-custom-remote-desktop-services.html) , but I need to automate this for 300 servers. Any suggestions? Can it be done via GPO?

Thanks!

Packett Loss Problem

We are having a problem with packet loss.

We don't have any problems connecting to the internet or got any packet loss error messages when browsing the internet on Laptop or ipad.  Therefore it seems the internet is working correctly.

However when logged on Laptop or ipad and go to website GoToMyPC  or Windows Desktop Remote Access to log into work PC we get packet loss issues.

Can anybody give me any advice or help on why this might be happening and if there is anything we can do to rectify it.

Remote App - Full screen

Hi People,

I am having a problem with publishing a remote app. The app is working fine but for some reason the app doesn’t start in full screen mode. When I maximize the app all is fine.

Word, Excel and notepad are all working like it should. Are there certain variables I can add to the Remoteapp to force it?

It’s a nonpublic application.

I chanced the "screen mode id" to 2 but that won’t change any thing.

Edge/Chrome browser and Remote Desktop Web Access with RemoteApp

I guess most of you know that if you use Microsoft Edge or Chrome to access the RD Web Access site (2012 R2) it will not automatically start the RemoteApps but the browser will download the .rdp file and the user have to start it "manually". Anyone solved the way around this or is it just the way it is because it's ActiveX based? I don't think 2016 solves this.

I know you can publish the RemoteApp shortcuts on the user's start menu via the Control Panel -> RemoteApp and Desktop Connections but this is not a solution for us since most of our users are BYOD users.

Two RDS sessions on one computer with different users

Hi,

The message I get :Another user of your computer is currently using this connection. The user must disconnect before you can log on.

This is when I try to log on a second user on one single computer to the RDS gateway server. What I want is to connect user A on the remote desktop on client A and than also connect user B to Client A. This because I want to have one person to control 2 different users on the RDS.

With kind regards,

RPC/HTTP Load Balancing Service

We have a RDS farm with a misbehaving gateway. A user can log on to RDWEB and then open a remote app but fails when authenticating. If we bypass the GW for local addresses then a user can open the app without issue. So looks like the GW tha is the problem.

One thing that we have noticed is if you open RD Gateway Manager and then open the properties of the GW (right click on the server) and then select the server farm tab, if you add the GW as a farm member it displays the following error:

Status: Error

Details: The RPC/HTTP Load Balancing service is not functioning on this RD Gateway server farm member.

However the service is running.

We have a number of farms in different domains. All but one worked. When I highlighted this to other engineers the AD engineer noticed that policy had not applied to the working GW server. When he applied policy the GW it ended up in the same state as the others.

So something in group policy seems to be breaking this but my AD experience (and access) is limited so its like a needle in a haystack.

Can anyone help point me in the direction here? Has anyone seen this error/issue before?

Adding an App to all desktops via remoteapp

Afternoon.

I am currently testing out remoteapp in our dev environment.  I have previously used server 2008 and when i want to select a remote app to 'push'/show on the RDWEB i would have to make sure it is saved on the host server and it would work.  Now on Server 2012 r2 i have set up 2 servers with NLB, and one server asking as my broker and RDWEB.   I have set up 4 remote desktops (2 each server) and would like to push an app to it.  Office 2016 for example.

I have gone into my Collections and gone to publish an app.  In there i have got to this screen:

http://imgur.com/BR7vQ4e

I can't seem to find any explanation to this.  Which do i pick?  I would like Word to be available on the RDweb.  Why do i have to pick a host server?  Reading the explanation, do i need to install on just one of the desktops for it to replicate around?

What if i have 100 PCs on here and i want to update an app or push a new app out?  Am i missing something here?

Any advice here would be great.  Thanks.

EventID 4625 (NULL SID) when trying to establish RDP connection over port forwarding firewall

Hi,

i created an environment with an IPCop Firewall. My goal is to establish a RDP connection to Terminal Server (IP 192.168.70.12) on the good (GREEN) side of the firewall from a client on the bad (RED) side of the firewall. To make this possible i create a port forwarding rule in the firewall, which forwards from port 7012 to port 3389.

Now i try to build up a connection from my client to the Terminal Server with mstsc and the address 10.0.14.118:7012 (10.0.14.118 is the RED IP Address of the firewall). When i try this, i get the following message:

"Login failure: user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced".

In the EventLog of the Terminal Server i get the following Event:

An account failed to log on.

Subject:
 Security ID:  NULL SID
 Account Name:  -
 Account Domain:  -
 Logon ID:  0x0

Logon Type:   3

Account For Which Logon Failed:
 Security ID:  NULL SID
 Account Name:  dkoenig_adm
 Account Domain:  imagoverum

Failure Information:
Failure Reason:  Unknown user name or bad password.
 Status:   0xC000006E
 Sub Status:  0xC000006E

Process Information:
 Caller Process ID: 0x0
 Caller Process Name: -

Network Information:
 Workstation Name: DKOENIG-LAPTOP
 Source Network Address: -
 Source Port:  -

Detailed Authentication Information:
 Logon Process:  NtLmSsp
 Authentication Package: NTLM
 Transited Services: -
 Package Name (NTLM only): -
 Key Length:  0

What goes wrong here, what can i do to solve this issue? The RDP session works perfectly, when i open the connection from a client within the GREEN network and the same credentials.

Thanks in advance

Regards
Dave

Powershell to find user who owns hard disk

Hi,

Deleting a userprofile in a RDS environment which has a broker and a filecluster with UPD is quite cumbersome so I would like to automate the process.

The function:

1.queries the number of the disk attached to a user on RDS: you can see on the vhdx (in security) who is the owner, but howto via powerhsell?
2.query on which server the user is logged on and LOG HIM OFF
3.ONLY WHEN USER IS LOGGED OF, deatach the disk (number)  from server (the id)
4.deletes the vhd (via sid of user.vhdx) on filecluster

I can do steps 2 tot 4 in Powershell but how to find the number of attached disk to the user on the broker and/or server?

Please advise.

Forcing RDP Gateway to use SSL

Windows Server 2012 R2 Remote Desktop Gateway Services with latest patches as of November.

All client computers are guaranteed to be Windows 7 or higher.

We do not have ISA Server.  We use Sophos.

When looking in the event log to check a client logging on via our gateway, I found this:

The user "FM\someusername", on client computer "174.106.xx.xxx", connected to resource "somecomputer". Connection protocol used: "HTTP".

I would think the connection protocol would be HTTPS.

QUESTION: How can we force RDP Gateway to use HTTPS for all connections?

Load variables and functions from ps1 within a function (not ps1)?

Hi,

When I load my functions/variables from a ps1 like this:

     $ScriptPath = (Split-Path ((Get-Variable MyInvocation).Value).MyCommand.Path)
    $Variables = $ScriptPath + "\Variables.ps1"
    $Functions = $ScriptPath + "\Functions.ps1"
    . $Variables
    . $Functions

it works fine

However when I add these lines into a function, they are not loaded.

function get-mystuff

{

     $ScriptPath = (Split-Path ((Get-Variable MyInvocation).Value).MyCommand.Path)
    $Variables = $ScriptPath + "\Variables.ps1"
    $Functions = $ScriptPath + "\Functions.ps1"
    . $Variables
    . $Functions

}What should I do to correct?

Please advise.

Specify a Program to Start Automatically When a User Logs On Does Not Work in 2016 Server

By default, Remote Desktop Services sessions provide access to the full Windows desktop, unless a program has been specified to start when the user logs on to the remote session. If an initial starting program has been specified, it will be the only program that the user can use in the Remote Desktop Services session. The Start menu and the Windows Desktop are not displayed when the user logs on to the remote session, and when the user exits the program the session is automatically logged off. This feature does not work 2016 server it ignores whatever we specify and always starts a Desktop Session. We are running a work group so group policy is not an option as a workaround. In the 2012 server, 2008 Server it works. Kindly please advise how to get this basic feature to run in Server 2016.

Hi... I need help,

I have this error message with the regular user account with admin privilege.  "user Profile failed to log. User Profile cannot be loaded".  I forget the password for the other accounts with admin privilege.  I am using the guest account for now.  However I would like to access the admin account and the other accounts.

The options I am showing here require admin privilege.  I would like to use the built in admin account? How to do so?

Thank you

Win2008R2 RDP Connection Issues

$

We have a server running the connection broker service and following a restart will no longer accept RDP connections.

We also experienced the same issue on another connection broker and domain controller in the same domain. After a restart we saw the following event in the system logs..Schannel Event 36870 (A fatal error occurred when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key)

We were able to resolve this with the following fix detailed here:

https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askperf/2014/10/22/rdp-fails-with-event-id-1058-event-36870-with-remote-desktop-session-host-certificate-ssl-communication/

We saw that the network service no longer had access to keys in the MachineKeys folder or on the certificate in the personal store. The read access was reapplied as suggested and worked.

However on our secondary connection broker the same symptoms presented and the same fix was applied. However RDP will still not work and now records the following event:

Schannel The internal error state is 10 ( Event ID:36888 )

We have a snapshot of the server which works with RDP up till the moment we restart the server.

How can I determine who is running a remote app

$

I am currently considering a migration from citrix XenAPp to pure RDS and remote apps. However, in testing on this one thing I am not able to do is see who is connected to a specific app and manage them.  If I can do this with powershell that is fine, however I am not seeing it.

For more clarification, I have 8-10 apps that users are in all the time.  In citrix I can select an app and see connected users.  From that I can send a message, disconnect, etc for that app specifically.  I don't want to necessarily terminate all of their sessions as I may be doing maintenance on one specific app.  Also, in citrix I can enable/disable one specific app not the entire host or anything like that.

Was really hoping to give up citrix but I am getting a feeling that may not be feasible as I continue testing and working through things with only RDS.  I am open to suggestions and any guidance.  If you want to take things offline please let me know.
